A little boy performed a Veena recital before the great Krishna Raja Wodeyar - the then Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore. Mesmerized, the king appointed the 12-year old Doreswami Iyengar as one of his court musicians.
"You are born for the Veena, my child!" said his guru, Venkata Giriappa.
Doreswami, a follower of Veena Maestro Sheshanna, began broadcasting on All India Radio in his teens and later served as the chief music producer for A.I.R Bangalore.
Recipient of India's third highest civilian honour 'Padmabhushan' Dr. Doreswami Iyengar was bestowed with several other prestigious national awards. The University of Mysore confered upon him an honorary doctorate.
He has travelled across the globe as the able ambassador of the Mysore style of Veena propagating the subtle techniques and the personality with earnest simplicity and ever composed temparament. His humility was as great as his musical genius.
His autobiography, "Veeneya Neralinalli," was published in 1997, with a Hindi translation by the Sangeet Natak Academy in 2021.
This book offers a fresh perspective on his life, based on two years of conversations the author had with the Veena maestro.
As you read this book, you'll be amazed how simple, humble, and down-to-earth was one of the geniuses of Mysore style Veena to have ever lived on this planet.
